Characteristics and application of CEM-3 copper clad laminate (CCL)

CEM-3 uses a glass cloth and glass felt composite substrate, also known as a composite substrate, rather than a simple glass cloth. CEM-3 is a composite copper-clad laminate with a performance level and a price between CEM-1 and FR-4. It uses epoxy resin fiberglass cloth-based bonding sheet as the fabric and epoxy resin fiberglass. The paper-based adhesive core material is covered with copper foil on one or both sides and then hot pressed.

CEM-3's glass transition temperature, immersion resistance, peel strength, water absorption, electrical breakdown, insulation resistance, UL index, etc. can all reach the FR-4 standard, the difference is that the bending strength of CEM-3 is lower than FR -4, thermal expansion is greater than FR-4.

Features:
(1) The basic characteristics are equivalent to FR-4, better than paper-based copper clad laminate, and the mechanical strength of CEM-1 is between these two.

(2) Excellent machinability.

(3) It can be processed according to the PCB processing conditions of FR-4 without any special changes.

(4) Metallization of holes is possible, and the reliability of through holes is basically the same as that of FR-4.

(5) The surface flatness is better than FR-4, the texture is very shallow, and it is more suitable for surface mount technology (SMT).

(6) The quality is slightly lighter than FR-4. It can be seen from the above that CEM-3 has a much lower glass fiber content than FR-4. The density of glass fiber is 2.56g/cm3, which is greater than the density of epoxy resin 1.36g/cm3; the density of glass fiber cloth is 1.0-1.1 g/cm3 is also greater than the density of glass fiber paper 0.1-0.5g/cm3.

(7) The price is suitable. The processing of CEM-3 is friendly to mechanical processing tools such as scissors, drills, milling cutters, and dies. The small wear of mechanical processing tools also means that the replacement cycle is extended and the production efficiency is improved.
